A new face at SMNG

With effect from 1 January 2027, the Chair of Eastern European History will be filled by PD Dr Moritz Florin – the SMNG is delighted that he has accepted the appointment and looks forward to working with him! Mr Florin was born in Munich in 1983 and took the International Baccalaureate in Shanghai in 2002. Since 2009, he has worked as a research assistant at the University of Hamburg, then as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU), and subsequently held the Chair of Eastern European History at the FAU. In addition, he undertook international research stays at the German Historical Institutes in Moscow, Paris and London, as well as in Bishkek, St Petersburg, Yerevan, Stanford and Vienna. Successful Orientation Week 2026

From 19 to 22 October, the History Department’s tutor programme offered a varied programme that gave first-year students the opportunity to network with other students and to get to know the city and the university. One highlight: the historical guided tour of Göttingen city centre, led by Dr Niels Petersen, was so well attended that he had to resort to using a megaphone so that everyone could hear him.
But during the SMNG presentation, too, academic advisor Dr Maria Rhode provided the most important information about the degree programme. In terms of content, the new arrivals were also able to get their first taste of history: During the ‘period speed dating’ session, Dr Dorit Engster, Prof. Anne Greule, Dr Maria Rhode and Marcel Smolinski introduced the four periods covered in the history proseminars. The History Tutors’ Group would like to extend its warmest thanks to everyone who contributed so enthusiastically to this successful week and is already looking forward to the orientation week at the start of the 2027 winter semester.

A successful anniversary celebration

It was a wonderful event! On 3 June, we celebrated our department’s 150th anniversary with over 350 guests in total, carrying on the celebrations until late in the evening. Under the theme “Historical academic cultures in and beyond Göttingen”, lecturers from our department explored milestones in Göttingen’s historical scholarship through a series of talks. The highlight of the evening was the inaugural lecture by Prof. Dr Kathrin Klausmeier.
Our heartfelt thanks go to all the visitors and everyone involved who, both on stage and behind the scenes, ensured through their dedication that we can look back on this day with great joy!
