Research

The research of our department is both scientifically fundamental and application-oriented, takes place in the lab, in the field, and in digital models, and spans a wide range of topics that study the causes and effects of deformation and heat flow in the Earth's crust using structural geological and geothermal methods in an interdisciplinary manner. However, we share one thrilling aspect in our departmental research, which is therefore identity-forming for us: We work across scales in very different dimensions of space and time, ranging from the micro to plate tectonics, from pore space to the geothermal system.

Structural Geology

Strukturgeologie

In the Structural Geology and Geodynamics Group, we investigate geological phenomena and processes across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. Our work focuses on both fundamental and applied research in the fields of volcanotectonics, seismotectonics, rock and fracture mechanics, structural analysis, and fluid flow in reservoirs, particularly fractured reservoirs. We place strong emphasis on an interdisciplinary scientific approach and on the integrated application of quantitative fieldwork, rock and fracture mechanics experiments, microscopy and structural analysis, as well as analytical and numerical modeling.

Geothermics

Geothermie

Geothermal energy is a renewable source of energy and the only renewable source of heat on Earth. Geothermal energy is based on the natural heat flow from the Earth's interior to the surface and the constantly regenerated heat through radiogenic decay in the Earth's crust. Therefore, as modern society we can utilize geothermal energy as a baseload preferably in the heating sector of the energy transition. Also, electricity, cooling and co-production of critical rare materials as Lithium can be provided from geothermal resources. Our research focuses on the question of how the geological subsurface can be used geothermally in a sustainable, efficient, and environmentally friendly way.
