Go to the application portalFrequently asked questions (FAQ)
Here you can find answers to common questions about applying for the M.Sc. Sustainable International Agriculture (SIA).
Is my Bachelor’s degree suitable, and can I apply before graduating? (3 questions)
Is my Bachelor’s degree suitable for SIA?
You need a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or higher education institution. Your degree programme must last at least three years and cover agricultural sciences or a related subject.
Your studies must include at least 60 ECTS credits in agricultural sciences. These credits can come from one or more agricultural subjects, including:
- Plant sciences
- Animal sciences
- Soil sciences
- Resource management
- Agricultural economics
If your university does not use ECTS: A three-year European Bachelor’s degree usually totals 180 ECTS credits. The required 60 ECTS in agricultural sciences therefore represent about one third of a three-year degree programme. You can use this as a rough guide when reviewing your courses.
We assess whether your previous studies meet these requirements, including how your credits compare with ECTS, when we review your application.
Can I apply before I finish my Bachelor’s degree?
Non-EU/Non-EEA applicants: You must have completed your Bachelor’s degree by the application deadline.
EU/EEA applicants: You can apply if you have completed at least 150 ECTS credits by the application deadline. Your transcript of records must show your credits and your overall average grade so far. Please submit proof of your completed degree as soon as you receive it, and no later than 15 November in the year you start the Master’s programme.
Can I have my documents checked before I apply?
No. We assess your qualifications and documents as part of the application process and cannot review them in advance. Please use the academic requirements to check whether your previous studies match the programme.
How can I prove my English language skills? (2 questions)
Which English language certificates and exemptions are accepted?
Please see our English language requirements for accepted certificates, minimum scores and exemptions. You must provide accepted proof of English proficiency unless you qualify for an exemption.
My previous degree was taught in English. Is a confirmation letter from my university sufficient?
No, a letter confirming that your previous degree was taught in English, often called a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate, is not accepted as proof of English proficiency.
Please check the English language requirements to see whether you qualify for an exemption or need to provide an accepted English language certificate.
Which documents and supporting evidence do I need? (4 questions)
Which documents do I need to upload?
You will need:
- Your CV in English with a passport-size photograph
- Your academic transcripts and degree certificates
- An official grading scale, unless this information is included in your transcript
- Accepted proof of English proficiency, unless you qualify for an exemption
- A completed and signed Master Declaration Form
The grading scale must show the highest possible grade and the minimum passing grade. If your transcript does not include this information, please upload a separate official grading scale issued by your university.
Please use the application document checklist for the full requirements, including translations and APS verification where applicable.
Do I need to declare previous or current Master’s studies?
Please complete and sign the Master Declaration Form, even if you have not previously started a Master’s degree programme.
If you have started or completed a Master’s degree programme, include this information in the form and complete the relevant fields in the online application. Also upload the corresponding transcripts and any degree certificates you have received.
Do I need APS verification?
If you obtained your Bachelor’s degree in China, India or Vietnam, you must provide APS verification for your academic documents. Please arrange this early enough to include it with your application by the deadline.
Should I include agricultural internships or work experience?
Yes. Please include relevant practical training, internships and work experience in your application and upload supporting documents where available. Relevant agricultural experience can be taken into account during selection.
How do I apply and submit my documents? (4 questions)
Which application category should I choose?
Please check whether the EU/EEA or Non-EU/Non-EEA application category applies to you before starting your application. Each category has its own application period.
Applications submitted in the wrong category cannot be considered.
How do I submit my application and documents?
- Register for the SIA application. You will receive a registration number by email.
- Complete and submit the online application form.
- Follow the instructions in the automatic email to upload all required documents.
- After uploading your documents, click the “Submit” button in the portal to complete your submission before the application deadline.
Your application is complete only when you have submitted the application form, uploaded all required documents and confirmed the document submission using the “Submit” button in the portal . Uploading the documents alone is not enough.
All required documents must be uploaded and submitted by the application deadline. Documents submitted afterwards cannot be considered, so please allow enough time to complete all steps.
You do not need to send your application documents separately by post or email.
Can I change my application after submitting the form?
Please check your entries carefully before completing your registration, especially the spelling of your name, your date of birth and your address. These details will be used for your admission letter and, if needed, your visa support letter. Once you have submitted the application form and completed your registration, these details can no longer be changed.
You can upload your documents until the end of the application period. Follow the instructions in the email you receive and confirm your document submission using the “Submit” button in the portal before the deadline.
I am applying for more than one Master’s programme. Do I need to upload my documents for each application?
Yes. Please upload the required documents separately for each Master’s programme you apply to at the University of Göttingen.
When will I receive a decision, and what happens next? (4 questions)
When and how are admission decisions made?
Applicants with particularly strong Bachelor’s grades may receive an admission offer before the application deadline. Other eligible applications are ranked after the deadline, taking Bachelor’s grades and relevant agricultural experience into account. Applying early does not guarantee admission.
We review applications as quickly as possible. Some applicants may receive an early offer; other decisions follow after the relevant application deadline and completion of the selection process.
What should I do if I receive an admission offer?
Please read your admission letter carefully and follow the instructions for accepting your place and starting enrolment. You must accept your place within 14 days.
If you decide not to accept your place, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can offer it to another applicant.
Can I defer my admission to the following year?
No. Your admission is valid only for the intake stated in your admission letter. If you would like to start the programme the following year, you will need to submit a new application during the relevant application period.
Do I need proof of financial resources for a student visa?
If you need a student visa for Germany, you will usually need to show that you can cover your living costs. A blocked account is one common option; a recognised scholarship or another accepted form of financial support may also be suitable.
Please check the current amount and accepted forms of proof with the German embassy or consulate responsible for your visa application. You can also find guidance on our page about financial requirements and funding opportunities.
